Nashville Spring Cleaning Tips

Stefano Diotaiuti

Spring is almost here, Nashville! If you’ve spent winter huddled inside, now’s a great time to open those windows and start thinking about spring cleaning. You may have your normal spring cleaning regimen, but all too often homeowners can forget a few important tasks.

Here are our recommendations to improve your spring cleaning from your floors to your shutters, so you can enjoy the prettiest season in Nashville.

Clean Your Windows For Spring

It’s common to wake up in the middle of March and realize that the lousy view out your bedroom window isn’t because of winter weather–it’s because of a filthy window. Spring is a great time to give your windows a deep clean. Get your awesome view back with these steps.

  • If the window opens, completely open it and clean out any dirt, dust or debris in the track. Try first to clean out as much as you can with a dry cloth or small brush, then use warm soapy water and a rag to clean out the rest. This will let your window open and close more easily, and ensure your window can completely close.

  • Spray down the window with a glass cleaner. You can use either a store-bought chemical cleaner, or make your own at home with two parts warm water and one part vinegar.

  • Wipe the windows with a microfiber cloth. These cloths are best for cleaning glass and leave the least amount of streaks.

Don’t Neglect to Clean the Window Treatments

A spotless glass window is no good if the window treatment isn’t similarly clean.

For fabric window treatments such as drapes or curtains, cleaning can be difficult. For thick fabric treatments, take them off the wall and take them outdoors to shake and get rid of any loose debris, then leave them in the washer on a cold cycle and air dry them. For thinner fabrics, you’ll want to handle them more delicately, and wash them by hand in a sink or tub.

Plantation shutters are probably the easiest window treatment to clean. Get rid of dust by wiping down with a microfiber cloth or barely damp rag. For spot cleaning, wipe with a slightly damp cloth to take off any stain, then go over with a dry cloth.

Give Some Love to Your Appliances

Your refrigerator, stove and dishwasher are as much pieces of furniture as they are appliances. Particularly with modern appliances such as those made of stainless steel, looks can be just as important as function. Clean all the nooks and crannies of your appliances, and make them look stunning again.

Stainless steel appliances can be polished with a solution made of 1 tsp. dish soap and 1 qt. of warm water, cleaned with a damp cloth and air-dried.

Get Every Single Surface

You’re likely going to give your floors and walls some much-needed TLC when you do your spring cleaning, but be sure to spread that attention around to some of the most often neglected surfaces. Here are just a couple of the places that are often skipped over when doing your spring cleaning:

  • All switches or handles that get touched a lot. These could be on the toilet, on electronics, or anywhere else in your home.

  • All surfaces in your shower, like the door, base, and soap ledge.

  • The top sides of ceiling fans.

  • Under your appliances - especially the big appliances like the fridge164 and washer/dryer.
